Been awhile since I posted for Daggie. Dag continues on in his senior years. He is still a happy boy but sometimes doesn't realize his limitations. He still wants to spin and go ballistic (in his mind). This morning he went over to his basket and took out a tennis ball and wanted to play. Then he saw Mike putting on his running shoes. Uh oh......"He left without me"!!!! What??? Bummer! Oh well at least mama is here to play with :)

Clear Lake family finds missing dog 10 months after Hurricane Ike

HOUSTON—Daizy, a 4-year-old Blue Lacy, is a survivor. For 10 months after Hurricane Ike, she was missing. Now, she's home again with the Bauer family in Clear Lake.

The hurricane blew down Joe and Kathy Bauer’s back fence, so they took Daizy and her Blue Lacy companion, Hank, to the Pet Palace in Webster for boarding until they could get the fence repaired.

“We ended up getting a call at 10 a.m. saying the dogs were gone. Both of ‘em,” said Joe Bauer. They found Hank that same day wandering in a wooded area behind the boarding kennel, but Daizy was gone.

“The kids would ask when it was freezing cold, when we had the snow, when we had thunderstorms, they would say, 'Where is Daizy? What do you think she’s doing? Is she OK?'” said Bauer.

The family, with the help of their friends and an extended network of Blue Lacy advocates they found online, printed fliers, offered a reward and plastered neighborhoods with yard signs bearing Daizy’s picture. I couldn’t bear the thought of her thinking we abandoned her,” said Kathy Bauer. “I just couldn’t live with that.”

They traveled throughout the Clear Lake, Webster and Pasadena areas responding to reports of possible sightings. But for 10 months, Daizy stayed missing. Last week, the family received the news they had been waiting for. Two of the Bauers' friends said they were positive they’d seen Daizy wandering in a wooded area along a power line easement in Webster, less than a mile away from the kennel where she was last seen, back in September.

With Hank leading the way, Joe went searching for Daizy and found her, just as their friends had promised. But after months on her own, apparently fending for herself, she was too skittish and nervously ran away.

Last Thursday night, Kathy made the trip with them. Neighbors reported seeing the dog emerge late at night from the wooded area through a break in a fence at the end of a cul-de-sac. Neighbors had become accustomed to leaving food out for her. She would make her rounds then disappear back into the woods at daybreak.

This time, Kathy called to Daizy and gave their familiar family whistle. The dog bolted right toward her. “She sat and lifted her paw for a handshake like she always would. Then she started whimpering,” said Kathy, who admitted she was whimpering a bit, too.
“I was in the middle of the street at 11:45 at night crying and thanking the Lord. It was a wonderful, wonderful reunion.”

The Blue Lacy is the official state dog breed of Texas. The breed was developed in the Texas Hill Country and is reportedly a mix of Greyhound, scent hound and coyote. It's a breed that dog experts predict would be able to fend well for itself if lost or abandoned. And now, although still at times a bit shy and nervous around strangers after her 10 month solo ordeal, Daizy is back at home with the rest of the Bauer pack.

“When you have a bond with an animal like that and you know how strong-willed she is, you just don’t give up,” said Kathy. And apparently neither does a little dog named Daizy.

Despite the many warnings about this, each summer brings numerous accounts of dogs that become sick or even die of heat stroke because they were left in a car. I'm finding this article to be very familiar.............Dagwood is still unable to navigate the stairs. Mike is his sole travel companion and "carrier". He's Dagwood's HERO (and mine :)!! He carries (flys) Dagwood down the stairs like Superman!......ok Superdog! Hearing for Dag is non existent and vision appears to be taking the same route. Daggie does appear to enjoy life still with short bouts of energy and continues his walks/runs......In appearance he is ageless :)

A older Border Collie is of course not a diseases. Caring for your older Border Collie can be very rewarding and challenging, as well as heartbreaking! On an average, Border Collies typically live 10 to 13, but many dogs go well beyond the age of 13. Just like with people, old age is a relative thing. Some dogs age gracefully, while others do not. Some dogs are old at 8-10, while others remain youthful and full of pep well beyond 12 or 13. As with anything, it depends on the breed of dog, the genes, the kind of care and the amount of stress in the dogs life. As with the human experience things can and will go wrong.
The older dogs needs become quite different depending on how well they are aging and what particular health problems they may have developed. Unfortunately most of the problems that occur as a result of the aging process are irreversible. About all we can do is take care of our elderly dogs the best way possible, giving them the best medical care, lots of love and making sure they spend their golden years as comfortably as possible.
Puppies may demand extra care, attention and time, but you know the difficulties will improve as they mature.
However, with the older dog, everything is down hill and past a certain point, you know the situation is not going to get better! You may find especially in the last couple of years, the senior citizen definitely needs additional care. As a dog ages, many of their needs begin to change. Some typical signs of the aging process are decreased activity and appetite, longer hours sleeping, stiffness in the extremities, and dyer skin and coat. Their predicament can be tentative and fragile.
The diet may need to be altered, as well as reduced in quantity. Aging typically sees a reduction in appetite. You may discover overnight that your less-active Border Collie has suddenly become obese. Obesity is not doing the older dog any favors because it can add stress to already weakened bones and joints. Consequently you may need to reduce the amount of food or change the type of food entirely. Personally I have never had a healthy Border Collie our athor breed lose its appetite due to age, but I have had quite a few become obese. As a rule Collies are easy keepers, so you do need to watch their weight! There are numerous excellent senior diets on the market. Some people though have found many of the senior diets not only lacking in palatability, but also too low in protein or fat. As a result, the older dog can either can get too thin or the coat becomes dry and brittle. Many people opt for leaving the dog on the same diet they have had for the entire life, as long as the dog is doing well. Also available are various vitamin supplements specially fortified with extra iron and calcium, with the senior in mind. Vets are discovering the value of moderate exercise in older people. The same rules apply in dogs…..the necessity for moderation becomes a necessity. Older dogs still need exercise, but not as strenuously as previous years.
It's not unusual for some older dogs to become deaf or blind. Unfortunately other than treating the dogs with kindness and respect, nothing can be done in these two areas. Make sure the ears and eyes are kept clean and free of matter. Of major concern are dental needs. It pays to keep the dogs teeth clean and watch out for any tooth or gum problems. Border Collies teeth seem to be more prone to tartar collection as they age and you may find yourself having to keep up with the teeth more often than than in previous years.
General health needs of the older dog may need to be treated differently. One of the typical problems that seem to hit many of the larger breeds, including older Collies, is arthritis. Sooner or later, your aging Collie will probably show these signs: stiffness, soreness or lameness. In years past a dog owner was pretty much limited to treatments of aspirin or various cortisones and steroid products. However, within the last few years there are several alternatives to these previously used drugs. They won't cure arthritis, but they may help alleviate some of the problems such as, pain and swelling typically seen in the arthritic dog. Recently, one of the most highly touted drugs is Rimadyl®. Opinion is still out on this drug, as many people have had either great success with it, or others have experienced side effects. Another popular choice in the ongoing battle with Arthritis is a combination of supplements called: Chondroitin Sulfate & Glucosamine HCI. Usually these two supplements are combined with vitamin C. Many dog owners, as well as Veterinarians have had good luck with these joint care products. When the situation gets to the point where the dog becomes really uncomfortable, there are various buffered aspirin products on the market. One good one is Arthricare, made by Veterinary Products Laboratories. However, with any aspirin product, the owner needs to be aware of possible stomach irritation. As with anything, consult with your Veterinarian before using any supplements or drugs. When things get to the point of no return when a dog is having great difficulty getting up, laying down or navigating, more extreme measures may be necessary. Some Veterinarians might suggest a minimal daily dosage of either prednisone or Phenylbutazone. These two drugs should never be used without first consulting a Veterinarian. Not only can they have dangerous side affects, but they can cause imminent death when combined either together or with other drugs. Basically any drug used on the older pet is just buying the dog a little more time and trying to ease the quality of life. But by the same token, you don't want to destroy them doing it.
There are orthopedic beds with lots of foam rubber, made especially with the aging pet in mind. Also, heated pads or bedding might help to make the aging pet more comfortable.
Many Vets recommend occasional health checks and blood work as a form of preventative medicine. Blood work especially can give early warning to pending health problems. This is especially a good idea if your aging dog just doesn't seem right. Anemia can often be a problem in the aging dog, as well as lower Thyroid levels. It is good to keep on top of these health issues, before something gets out of control.
NEVER, EVER should the older dog be left outside to deal with the weather elements, whether it is heat or cold. Situations that a younger dog brushes off, can become a calamity for the oldster. Not only do they need to be protected from weather extremes, but they deserve it, after all the great rewards they have given to the owner!
The older dog may need to go outside to eliminate more often. The once fastidious oldster may find themselves in a position of not being able to “hold it” as they once were able. Thus, more frequent trips outside become necessary. A frequent Collie problem (and other breeds as well), is a condition found especially in the spayed bitch.....leakage of urine. This condition is a medical problem and has absolutely nothing to do with housebreaking. There are various products on the market, such as female hormones that can help with this condition. First though, infection needs to be ruled out. Consult with your Veterinarian about taking in a urine sample to check for an infection. If infection is ruled out, more that likely the problem is incontinence from being spayed. There are several studies in the works regarding this problem. This problem may become even more common with the recent pratice of early spay, thanks to the overpopulation problem of dogs.
Personally I just cringe every time I hear of an older Collie being abandoned or given up for adoption....I just can't imagine such a thing and the cruelty of it all.
Border Collies especially, more so than any other breed (thanks to their close ties to humans), deserve much better than this! After all the pleasure your dogs have given you over the years, they deserve the best care and treatment possible whether they be a retired show champion, brood bitch or just a valued pet.
Whatever they may be, they deserve the extra time that comes with their aging years.
Most important of all, don't forget the love and attention that they crave and deserve! It becomes a rewarding experience for all involved!

Dagwood is waaaaaay happy to be home! The first 2 days home he wasn't feeling very good but he seems better today. We took him off the prednisone because there was no change/improvement and the side effects were causing additional ill effects. It's Mike's birthday today and he and Dag started the day off with a 2 mile walk before going to work. Way to go guys!!!

Two more days and Daggie goes to the Sea Dog Inn for vacation. Dagwood has been going to the Sea Dog Inn for about 8 years. The people there are very knowledgeable and friendly. Actually the same people work there since we moved to Texas and I think that's a good indication that the people love their work and are happy there. Various kennel options are available that reside in a peaceful country atmosphere. Dagwood always stays in the indoor/outdoor climate controlled suite and gets extra play time/exercise time.

Spring cleaning today and found these photos of Daggie when he was a pup just "free floating" among stuff. Dag's resting comfortably today. The weather is NASTY and it's been dark as night all day. This is where we are thankful that Dag can't hear as the thunder is so loud and shaking the house. Usually he would be shaking and so frightened but he looks so peaceful. I remember these times so well in California when Daggie played in his own swimming pool. Enjoy :)

Dag sees the vet

Dagwood had an appointment with the vet yesterday. The vet’s thoughts are he doesn’t look 13 years old…….wanted to give him a chance…...didn’t say yea or nay if changing his meds would work. He can’t take the rhymadyl with the anti-spinning drug so she switched to prednisone. Prednisone is not a drug that can be taken for a long period of time and is not a cure.

There is no cure for vestibular disease…….no known cause…….most dogs come out of it with almost no symptoms (maybe just a head tilt). A reoccurrence is not common though it happens………(figures it happened to Daggie). More testing would need to be done to rule out other causes such as tumors etc (CT, MRI etc).

Good news:
He ate his treats yesterday as well as a hamburger and dog food
He played a little with me when he and Mike got home

Not so good news:
Mike has to carry Dag up and down the stairs
Mike has to take him to work
He walks like he’s drunk and falls a lot
His head is constantly spinning
He has a hard time seeing because he is unable to focus because of the spinning.
He is just about deaf….hears very little

My thoughts are……….I just don’t know when to say when…….Mike’s not going to carry him up and down the stairs forever…….changing drugs might prolong his life but on the other hand cause other problems at the same time.

Took Dagwood to the beach yesterday and played with him in the surf for a bit. Besides hitting the sand with a "face plant" when first arriving at the beach he seemed to have fun. He's still unsteady while walking and doesn't have much of an appetite. He won't even eat his treats right away. He is eating a small amount though and we're monitoring hm closely.

Mike walked Daggie this morning and got rained on so between the salt water yesterday at the beach and rain this morning Dag's a pretty clean boy! I'm off to color my Easter eggs!

The world is spinning

Dagwood's world is spinning once again. I thought vestibular disease doesn't reoccur??? Tuesday night around midnight he was in acute distress again.......not able to walk with eyes darting back and forth and in extreme discomfort. We were up all night with him and gave him one of the tranquilizers that we use for thunderstorms. Took about 3 hours for the drug to take affect but Dag finally got some relief (us as well). Mike took him to work and he mostly slept all day. Wednesday evening he was a tad better but still uncomfortable. The worst thing for me.......is knowing his world is spinning. The duration of acute symptoms this time seem to be short(er) lived compared to last time. Still, he is back to being carried up and down the stairs and walking like he is drunk. He is back at work today with Mike and is reported to being more active than yesterday.

Calling the vet again today and asking them to "get out their books" and offer up any advice they can think of. I know there is no cure but there has got to be something he can take to lesson the severity of his symptoms.

Until then MORE TREATS for my sweet pea!!

Well Dag is not getting much exercise today as you can see the weather is keeping us inside.
Rain, thunder, lightning. One good thing about Daggie not hearing well is he doesn't get scared by the big booming thunder we get out here in Texas. I guess for every negative there is a positive :). Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday. Oh! by the way if interested the shuttle "Discovery" after a couple of delays is ready to launch today. The countdown continues toward a sunset launch at 7:43 p.m. Eastern Time. If you've never seen one, it is spectacular. Usually the news will cover the launch but even better if you have access to the NASA channel the coverage is awesome.

Drama on Dagwood's 3 mile walk

Mike and I decided to walk Dag to Blockbuster (3 mile walk) and drop off a movie while the construction guys were installing a sliding glass door downstairs. Along the way at the auto service store there was a German Shepperd in the back of a truck. The dog started going in circles in the back of the truck and then jumped out with his hackles up charging for Dagwood. Needless to say we were trying with all our might to keep the dog away from Daggie. The owner of the dog ran out and finally caught his dog and told us his dog had never jumped out of the truck before. Then on the way back we decided to cross the street just in case the guy and his dog were still there. UNBELIEVABLY I looked over across the street and that darn dog jumped out of the back of the truck again and crossed 4 LANES......unreal he wasn't hit by a car. AGAIN we are trying to keep this dog away from Dag. Dagwood is just about deaf....he hears very little and is so fragile. So many people come up with their dogs and say how friendly their dog is and then don't ya know it.....their dog ultimately bites Dag. It has happened twice here in Texas so we don't trust ANYONE that we don't know saying their dog is friendly. After MUCH running around trying to capture this dog......traffic stops.......I'm screaming....Mike is guarding Dagwood and the owner of the dog is trying to capture his dog which he finally caught. Mike and I are somewhat sore from trying to kick the dog away and throwing our water bottles at him. The owner of the dog seemed to be mindless of the situation........UH HELLO!!!! Your dog just jumped out of the truck 20 minutes ago, you would think he would have learned from that situation and secured his dog.....but noooooo. I'm happy that his dog didn't get hit by a car but I am concerned for his dogs safety in future situations. Afterall a dog's master must have their animal controlled for his safety and the safety of others.

PLEASE CONTROL YOUR PETS!!!! They are FAVORITE FUR FRIENDS!!!

The Dagmeister is still up and running. He ran 2 miles this morning with Mike. Dag seemed a little bit like he wasn't feeling so good today....but we all have our troubled days. I come home on my lunch hour each day to take him potty etc. Gotta monitor my "Sweet Pea!". Still have him on the strict regimen of TREATS......."does a body good"......can't remember the last I heard that saying! LOL! Thanks for all your sincere caring for Dagwood! Dag's still got character as you can see in this photo. Sometimes he can go upstairs by himself now and sometimes he needs a little encouragement. He's definitely a trooper! Mike walked him 3 miles this morning after not much sleep last night because of the wind. He may not be able to hear very well but he sure has the instinct to notice when something is up. He's showing more signs of age since his bout with vestibular disease. Only a couple more weeks until his 13th birthday YAY! Daggie!

Dag seems to be ok at times and then at other times I can't tell if he is ok or not. It is so disturbing to not be able to know how he feels........is he happy?........can we do more for him?

This is indeed a roller coaster of emotions and the stress level is off the charts.

The best advice we've had so far is to give Dag MORE TREATS! I'm thinking he likes this advice. So as we continue............more treats it is!

First Lady Michelle Obama told People magazine that her family has decided to adopt a Portuguese water dog, pointing to the breed’s medium-sized and good-natured reputation. The breed is also hypoallergenic — a must, given daughter Malia’s allergy to dogs.
The first lady said her daughters will have to wait until the end of April to get the dog, since her family is planning on going away for Spring Break.

Day by day.........Daggie continues to relax. Navigating the stairs (indoors) still proves to be problematic but if we get a running start it seems to help. The stairs outside don't seem to bother him as much. I wonder if it is the width of the stairs? Hmmm The stairs indoors are much narrower than the outside ones. A friend suggested using one of those firewood canvas carriers with a handle on top to help stable him. Sounds like a good idea and something to try if he continues to have issues. All in all Dag seems to be much happier and continues with his walks. Dagwood sings, "boys just wanna have fun......." Fun is the word of the day in Daggie's book! That's progress! Keep it up big boy!!! because you are such a sweeeeet pea!

Yesterday when Daggie came home from work with Mike he had a SPARKLE in his eye. Later in the evening he was playing with Mr. Kong.....barking and having some fun. His face is much more relaxed although his balance and the head tilt still exists. We are just soooooo HAPPY to see him improving! This is one RUFF roller coaster!

Daggie's condition has not changed much. I fear once the medication wears off he might go into spinning again. I hope that doesn't happen. We take it slowly each day now.

Day 5 with Vestibular disease

Dagwood walked with Mike about 1 mile today. GO DAGGIE!! We want to keep up his normal adventures as possible. He stills exhibits a strong right head tilt. He did eat this morning but isn't interested tonight (except for his treats...milkbones). We try and feed him the same time daily to keep him in his normal pattern. We went to the matinee movie to see Gran Torino and Dag was ok when we got home. We just have to be careful knowing that the stairs are extremely dangerous for him right now and we take the correct precautions to keep him falling down them. All in all I think he has made good progress from earlier in the week when I found him in such distress.

We hope to see continued progress and maybe even complete recovery soon. Mike will take him to work tomorrow to monitor his situation. Thanks to everyone that has sent their best wishes for Daggie!! XXOO

Day 4 with Vestibular disease

Day 4 and Dagwood continues with slow progress. He eats only when hand fed. So far he is eating milkbones, pumkin, hard boiled egg (the whites), noodles and chicken. We walked him today and he still is swaying a bit but when Mike runs a little bit he is a ble to keep up the pace. Just have to watch him on any uneven ground because he'll fall.

He's a sleepy boy. Can't wait till he gets through this. It's hard on us to see him like this and I can't even imagine what it is like for him. So far a little better each day.

Chicken with Black Cherry Sauce

Share this Valentines Day with this delicious dish for your canine buddy!

2 chicken breasts

Sauce
1 8oz		can black cherries, pitted
1 tbs		brown sugar
1 tsp		cornstarch
1/4 tsp		calcium

Chicken & Potatoes
Bake or pan fry chicken breasts. Let cool and dice. Peel and quarter potatoes and boil until cooked. Drain and mash. Let cool
Sauce
Drain juice from cherries. Mix cornstarch into juice and bring to the boil. Turn the heat down and stir until sauce thickens. Add the drained cherries.
Shape mashed potato into a heart. Fill the centre with the diced chicken. Pour sauce over the top. You can add some diced vegetables to the chicken

Cooking time: 35 minutes

Dag's a little better

Very slow change in Dagwood. He can almost walk a straight line although his head dips to the right. He hasn't eaten anything except for a couple of milkbones. He seems to be in good spirits and always wags his tail when we talk to him. We have the upstairs blocked off so there is no chance of him falling down the stairs. You can tell he just wants to rip around like normal but everytime he starts to walk fast he takes a tumble (the wood floors aren't much help with his balance). All in all I think he is pretty comfortable. He get LOTS of kisses......you can't help but love this sweet pea. One month until Daggie's 13th birthday and he plans to be back in tip top shape to celebrate!

Dagwood is back from the hospital tonight. Our place is a maze of staircases so Mike has to carry him around. He has 2 prescriptions to help him with the dizziness for a week. Our local vet at Marina Bay hospital is very helpful. She estimates a week for recovery.

It's been a very stressful 2 days so far of not knowing the outcome of Daggie's recovery but we feel because of Daggie being so healthy we are optimistic he will make a complete recovery and be better than ever! Thanks to everyone for their positive notes and caring concerns.

I came home from work today to find Dagwood disorientated. He had rapid eyed movement and was unable to stable himself. We rushed him to the vet and they think it is Vestibular Disease. This is a disease that there is not much known about but the good news is that it comes on suddenly and leaves quickly without any lingering affects.

Most cases of vestibular disease are peripheral and no known cause is determined. These are referred to as idiopathic.

Vestibular disease typically affects older dogs with an average age of 12 to 13 years.

Animal afflicted with vestibular disease become suddenly very dizzy and the symptoms can be very drastic and frightening to the owner.

What to Watch For

Falling

Incoordination

Head tilt to one side or another

Circling

Rolling

Eyes continually drifting side to side or up and down

Stumbling or drunken walking.

Diagnosis

Vestibular disease can affect an animal very suddenly. Due to the signs of head tilt, circling and staggering, many owners feel their pet has had a stroke. Fortunately, strokes are rare in animals.

Dagwood is in the hospital on an IV and calmed with valium. In the morning we will hopefully be able to bring him home. Please pray for Daggie :) It was so hard to see him so uncomfortable and leave him in the hospital

Today is Groundhog Day, the day the South’s own General Beauregard Lee, PhD, will come out of his cushy digs at the Yellow River Game Ranch, will see or not see his shadow, and become celebrity for the day either way.Around the country, there are a few other famous groundhogs, also known as woodchucks or marmots, and they’ll get their due, too. The curious story of the groundhog as weather forecaster apparently started because they are timid little creatures afraid of their own shadows, so if the shadow frightens them, back into their home they go, not to return for 6 weeks. Now, why it is that spring supposedly follows the groundhog’s advice…well, that part of the legend is up for debate.Back at the Yellow River Game Ranch, imagine how General Beauregard Lee must feel with all of those tv camera lights shining!! No matter what General Lee sees today, he’s predicting a fun event this Saturday, one that’s sort of named after him. Ground Dog Day is a party and silent auction at the Westside Pizza in Atlanta to benefit the Save Our Pets Food Bank and the East Point Pup Project. The festivities include hors d'oeuvres, live music and a silent auction, including bidding on dates with local men and women. There's even an Atlanta fireman up for bid. Atlanta’s Ground Dog Day goes from 4-8pm and tickets are $15 in advance or two for $25, $20 at the door. For more information, you can email Cindy or just show up at Westside Pizza.Around the country, humane societies and dog clubs celebrate Ground Dog Day, which can mean different things to different people, but mostly means a lot of fun for the dogs. KEY LARGO -- Red the boxer gave Santa Claus a gift to remember: a big, slobbery kiss on the nose.

After five years of playing Santa -- at the annual Pets & Piña Coladas fundraiser for the third-grade Wild Kingdom class at Key Largo School -- plumber and animal lover Bob Hutchinson has learned to expect the unexpected.

''I've been peed on by dogs, pooped on by birds,'' he said. ``But pets still are way easier than kids.''

More than 300 pets, most rescued from abandonment or abuse, posed for pictures with Santa over the weekend at the Keys Kritters pet shop in Key Largo.

Red, who drew a roar of laughter for the kiss he gave Santa, was near death 10 years ago when Mercy and Bruce Yanda found him in the Redland, hacked by a machete.

''Red, show your battle scars,'' Bruce Yanda said. ``He has a big one right behind the ears.''

The Yandas also brought their other dog, Ruby the mutt, who was found living under a car.

Rosalyn Wojciechowski brought her rat terrier Niko, who was tied to a dock for three days before being rescued. Sandy Sherrill brought Jackson, her ``found dog.''

''I found him running right down the middle of U.S. 1 when he was about 9 weeks old,'' Sherrill said.

Jackson weighed nine pounds and was extremely sick with worms, ticks and fleas. Five years later, Jackson weighs 120 pounds and serves as the mascot at the Rock Harbor Paint store.

Keys Kritters owner Robby Majeska said it is the 25th year he has held a photo shoot for pets with Santa. The tradition dates back to the days when he and his father owned a combined 37 pet shops in several states.

Since moving to the Keys 10 years ago, Majeska said he has tried to get involved with local schools to help kids learn about animals and the responsibility that is required to care for them.

While Majeska said it was wonderful to see all the rescued pets that now have good homes, the goal is to prevent future animals and pets from being abused or abandoned.

In the Wild Kingdom class, the students take care of animals that include lizards, snakes and hamsters. If the kids keep up good grades and show responsible care of the pets, they are allowed to keep them at the end of the school year.

For the photo shoot, most critters are welcome to settle on Santa's lap.

''We've had chickens, frogs, iguanas, chameleons, rats, gerbils, rabbits, sugar gliders, tarantulas and even a skunk,'' said David Martinez, who has been trying to get pets to look at his camera since the event's inception in Key Largo a decade ago. ``Santa has no fear.''

Hutchinson said he's from Massachusetts, where skunks often would stroll into his backyard. The key was not to startle them.

Puddin' the guinea pig and Chico the lovebird were among the pets who saw Santa on Sunday.

Hutchinson, who grows his gray beard long for the occasion and works for $200 worth of cat food, was patient with even the most scared or rambunctious pets.

Martinez did his best to get the pets to look at the camera, using squeaky toys and a yellow plastic chicken clad in a purple polka-dot bikini.

''We need a rabbit,'' Martinez said when Katie Mason hopped onto the chair with adopted greyhound Romeo.

Mason said she was walking Romeo on Saturday night and asked him whether he wanted to see Santa. Romeo's ears perked up.

''I told him don't forget to ask Santa for the winning lottery ticket number,'' she said.

Many owners adorned their pets in festive accessories, including Santa hats and reindeer antlers for poodles Michaela, Wendy and Rusty.

Zoe, a half-Maltese, half-poodle, seemed happy wearing her pink sunglasses.

''Zoe is short for Zoloft because she is an anti-depressant,'' owner Linda Hoffman said.

``She keeps the smile on my face. You can't feel down when a dog is around.''

Darby's Christmas Story

It was a Christmas eve Darby and Lara will never forget. Lara was visiting Darby for the holidays. They had just finished a grand Christmas dinner with lots of Purina prime rib dinner, Darby's favorite. Ann was in the kitchen cleaning up. Lara and Darby were playing in the living room when all of a sudden they heard singing outside. Darby and Lara ran to the door, and there standing in the lightly falling snow were Christmas carolers singing rudolf the red nosed reindeer. It was so cold you could see the singers' breath rising in the air like puffs of smoke.

The carolers called for Lara and Darby to join them. It was late, but Darby asked if they could go for a little while. Yes! So, Darby and Lara grabbed their coats and hats and gloves and went out to sing with the carolers. It was great fun!

As Darby and Lara headed home, the snow stopped, the stars started twinkling and the moon was so bright, they could see through the darkness. Just as they arrived at Darby's door, Lara stopped. "Listen Darby, did you hear that? It sounds like bells!"

"I hear it, too!" Darby said hurrying toward Lara. "Look up there," Lara pointed. "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Darby asked. "Yes! It's Santa! It has to be!" Lara gasped excitedly. "Listen, I think I can hear him calling out 'Ho, Ho, Ho.'

"Yes!" Darby said, "I hear it too! It looks like he's over Maryann's house. We better get inside and put out the milk and milkbones! We need to get to bed ourselves."

"Let's run," Lara said.

Quickly, Lara and Darby poured Santa's milk in a glass and put five milkbones on a plate. They placed the snack on the hearth near the fireplace so Santa would be sure to see it. As they climbed into bed, they heard Ann downstairs chuckling. "That must have been one big shooting star those kids saw," one said. Lara and Darby just smiled at each other as they drifted off to sleep. They knew what they saw was not a shooting star. Shooting stars don't ring bells and they don't sing out, "Merry Christmas to all and to all a goodnight!"

I guess snow in Texas would constitute as severe weather especially because it doesn't happen very often. Wow! Hurricane Ike 2 months ago and now SNOW! The snow on the palm trees is beautiful. Texas is known for their BBQ and smokers.......but a smoker covered in snow? LOL! Nothing like going out to do a little grill'n and making a snowman at the same time.

LEAGUE CITY — After almost two years of failed attempts by residents, the city council last week approved spending $194,000 to build a park where dogs can romp unleashed.

In a 4-3 vote, city council members OK’d the initial phase of the park on 8 acres down the street from the police station. The vote was a victory for Councilman Neil Baron, who advocated for the park even before his election to the council.

“We are taking what is essentially a useless piece of land and making it into something,” Baron said.

The decision came almost a year after the council rejected spending $70,000 to build a dog park near the Newport Subdivision. That plan was derailed because of complaints from homeowners that the park would be too close to their houses.

Baron, who owns an Australian shepherd and golden retriever, was part of the League City Dog Park Committee. The group even created a Web site to promote the park’s construction.

Even with issues such as debris pickup, charter review and flooding problems in the Lakeside subdivision on the agenda, discussion and debate about the park took almost an hour and proved to be the most robust of the night.

That was in addition to a parade of supporters and a few opponents who spoke during the public comment part of the city council meeting Tuesday.

City parks Director Chien Wei, with careful prompting from Baron, laid out the plans for the park.

The park would be the first in Galveston County dedicated to dogs. Plans call for a fenced area divided into sections for big dogs and small dogs.

In addition to the $194,000 to build the park, the city will spend about $3,000 a year for maintenance, Wei said.

Construction money will come from the city’s park fund. Money in that account comes from fees paid by developers granted permits to build new subdivisions in the city. About $1.9 million in that account is set aside to build parks.

The maintenance would include regular mowing and the installation of a plastic bag dispenser for owners to use to pick up after their dogs. Supporters insisted general upkeep of the park would come from dog owners.

The approved site is called Centerpoint Park, which has been a storm-water retention area along Walker Street. While construction will require building a parking area and road access, Wei said the site’s advantage was that it includes plenty of tree cover.

The park had plenty of detractors.

“It’s gone from a nice concept to something that (costs) three times as much,” Councilman Mike Barker said.

The park’s price tag was $120,000 more than proposed previously because the Newport site already had some infrastructure, Wei said.

Still, Barber said the park should be part of a “priority list just like road projects.”

The dog park was No. 22 on a priority list drafted from a 2005 survey of residents, Wei said.

That did not sit well with Councilman Tim Paulissen.

“We have other issues with other parks, such as athletic fields,” said Paulissen, noting that the request for ballparks ranked well above the dog park in the survey.

Most of the projects ranked higher on the list had either already been addressed or were being built, Wei said.

Baron said he hoped the park would serve as a catalyst for others in the area. He said he also thought that pet supplies corporations would want to partner with the city to expand and enhance the park.

A timeline for the start of construction of the park was not given.

Since Dagwood insists on dumping his food all over the place we decided to take a pro active stance and find something that would be "dump proof". This doggie diner holds 20 lbs of dog food inside the cabinet and the bowls are sunk in for a more secure fit. Hopefully he won't chew on the sides like he does the walls currently next to his food dish. Dogs and their strange habits....geeze!

A Thanksgiving Short Story.....................

At Teri's house on Thanksgiving day, everything smelled fantastic! The grown-ups were in the kitchen filling the best china dishes with all sorts of yummy Thanksgiving food. In the spirit of sharing, every Thanksgiving Teri's family made a big turkey dinner to eat with special friends.

All of a sudden the doorbell rang. It was Mary, one of Teri's favorite people. "Come in!" Teri said excitedly. "Dinner's almost ready!" "I've brought turkey," Mary said, smiling, holding up a dish of great-looking turkey. And Mike has made Mashed potatoes," Teri said. This is going to be great! Dinner was terrific. The turkey and stuffing was especially good this year. But, the big question every year at Teri's house was: "Who will share the wishbone?" This year was no different! "Me, me!" Teri and Mary pleaded. The grown-ups smiled. Mike nodded and said, "Go ahead you two!" Teri and Mary were given the wishbone. Each grabbed one end and pulled. All of a sudden, the wishbone slipped from their fingers and flew into the air! From nowhere, Dagwood appeared and grabbed the wishbone! Everyone jumped up! The grown-ups started shouting: "Get it!" "Grab the bone!" "Dagwood can't eat that!" "Bones aren't safe for pets!"

Chairs fell over and dishes almost crashed to the floor as everyone tried to catch Dagwood. Dagwood loved all the attention and ran happily around the room, slipping away each time someone got close! Finally, Mike caught Dagwood and got the wishbone away. "Whew! Here it is," Mike said, holding the wishbone in the air for all to see. Oh no! It was broken! For a moment, everyone was silent. "Well," Mike said, starting to laugh. "It looks like Dagwood gets to make the wish this year! I hope it's a good one!" Then, everyone laughed and applauded. "More pie!" Mary said. This is a Thanksgiving to remember always, Teri thought, looking around at all the happy faces. Teri would always remember this Thanksgiving as "Dagwood's Thanksgiving Wish!"

Dagwood's day at the vet

I am happy to report that Dagwood's visit to the vet went very well. Good News! The vet did a blood test and said his heart, liver and kidneys are in EXCELLENT shape as well as his muscular physique. He’s an old man with arthritis. We started him on Rimadyl which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (NSAIDS). The doc gave him his annual physical etc. and every time she let loose of Daggie he came over to me and pushed my arm up off the chair and snuggled! She said someone loves his mommy! It was really cute. Anyways no more running….she said there are not too many 12 year old dogs running on a regular basis LOL! Walks are great as well as swimming. We’ve been giving him Chondroitin and Glucosamine and need to add fish oil tabs. Gee…everything we take LOL!

I've been reading about the side effects which can be detrimental for some dogs. Most drugs have side effects and we will watch for a any signs that the drug might be causing harm.

In the meantime cheers to Daggie!

Dagwood is showing these signs which indicate he might be in pain. We think it's his hips because he has such a hard time getting up. His hearing isn't as acute as used to be and he has a hard time navigating stairs. Any thoughts? Suggestions? To help Daggie?

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.

Dogs left homeless by Hurricane Ike can be adopted

More than 20 dogs from Texas made homeless by Hurricane Ike are expected to be ready for adoption today at the Humane Society of Broward County's Dania Beach shelter.

Corralling loose animals continued Tuesday along with air and land surveys in Chambers and Jefferson counties continued; Orange and Liberty counties haven't yet been searched.

Yesterday, agriculture officials estimated as many as 20,000 cows and horses were roaming the region. About 15,000 cows have been sighted, officials said. Rescues are continuing and donations of supplies and feed are needed.

Twenty percent of those — about 4,000 cows — did not survive the storm, said Andy Vestal, Texas AgriLife Extension Service liaison to the State Operations Center for Hurricane Ike. Read more ...
