How to tell if your dog is in pain

Dagwood is showing these signs which indicate he might be in pain. We think it's his hips because he has such a hard time getting up. His hearing isn't as acute as used to be and he has a hard time navigating stairs. Any thoughts? Suggestions? To help Daggie?

VOCALIZING
~ Whining

ACTIVITY LEVEL
~ Reluctant to move
~ Difficulty getting up from a laying position

SELF-PROTECTION
~ Limps

POSTURE
~ Lays on his side
